1966
I was born in July 1966. During my first years, I probably often heard the
Swedish versions of Bacharachs music on the radio. But what did I care...?!
1978
New Wave made me quit football (soccer) and isntead plug in my guitar. My
biggest hero was Elvis Costello, and I still remember the first time I flipped
the live-compilation "Live Stiffs" and Elvis says "this one's
written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David". The names, Bacharach and David,
said nothing to me, but the song, "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself",
was absolutely beautiful and from that day I've bought just about everything
I've come across with the name Bacharach on it (which wasn't much).
1989
This year, I bought my first CD-player. A couple of months before I had bought a
lowprice Dionne Warwick-CD. My Bacharach-collection consisted of "Make It
Easy On Yourself", "Portrait In Music", "Lost Horizon",
a tribute-compilation, Dionnes "Valley Of The Dolls" and a few singles
like Dusty Springfields "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself",
Susan Maughans "Come And Get Me", Julie Rogers "The Love Of A
Boy", Sandie Shaws "Always Somethin' There To Remind Me" and her
version of "Anyone Who Had A Heart" together with B.E.F. I also had a
couple of album tracks like Carl Myréns "Sen drömmer jag en stund om dig
(I Say A Little Prayer)" and The Stranglers "Walk On By".
1997
The Japanese re-issues had given me a complete Burt Bacharach solo collection,
and good hunting at record resellers bargain bins and jumble sales had given me
things like "Arthur", "Together?" and some of Dionnes 80's
LP's. So in late summer 1997 I really thought I knew about everything in Burt
Bacharach back-catalogue. Then, I connected to the internet for the first time
and made my very first Altavista-search. As I found nothing on 'Tot Taylor', I
searched for 'Burt Bacharach' instead and on top of the search results was A
House Is Not A Homepage. There I found Alec Cummings discography...
I felt very happy as I finally could get a grip on the man's works, but I also
felt desperate as there was so much I'd never heard of before, so many records I
had to buy...
As I started searching the local and online record stores, I stumbled across
more and more recordings missing in Alecs discography, so I made my own list,
which after a while became so big I decided to publish it online as there may be
others interested.
It didn't take long until the first tape with 90 minutes Bacharach-rarities
arrived and all of a sudden I found myself sitting in the middle of a worldwide
tape-trading organization...
For years I had been selling records from my own collection, duplicates and
other things I didn't need anymore. Internet gave me the opportunity to reach
foreign customers and as it's expensive to send money between countries, I
offered them to buy me gift certificates from Amazon and CDnow. Guess what I
bought for them?
2001
The tape trading and record selling resultet in a growing collection, from maybe
250 songs to over 2.000 in three years. And it's still growing...
The problem with a collection growing so fast is that I don't have the time to
learn the data like I used to. There was a time when record labels, producers
and alternate takes was common knowledge for me, but I must confess, I know very,
very little about those 2.000 recordings! For each question I may get, I have to
look on the sleeves, read the liner notes, check my email and read the Burt
Bacharach Forum to find the answers. So, you are the experts, I'm just a
collector. And I don't need to spend any big money, or huge amounts of time,
doing this. With your help, it all comes very easy!
Thank you!!
